Moving Bed Bio Reactor (MBBR)
Moving Bed Bio Reactor (MBBR) is a bio media which is a medium for growing and attaching bacteria to its surface so that bacterial growth becomes more effective and controlled.
HISTORY
- Invented and initially developed in late 1980s at Norway
- 800 MBBR installed on year 2014 – Spread in 50 countries
- Widely used because of the small footprint
The MBBR system consists of a tank (similar to an anaerobic and aerobic activated sludge tank) with special plastic carriers that provide a surface where a biofilm can grow.
These solutions significantly increase the capacity and efficiency of existing wastewater treatment plants, while minimizing the size of new plant deployments.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
- Use special carrier elements for bigger surface area to colonize by bacteria
- When the suspended porous biofilm carriers are continuously mixed in operated aeration tank, active biomass will grows into biofilm on the surface of these carriers.
- Biofilm thickness is maintained and controlled by continuous sloughing created by the aeration-mixing process
- Secondary clarification is typically used
- There is no recycle activated sludge sent back into the process
Key Component of MBBR
- Reactor (Aerobic or Anoxic)
- Media
- Media Retention Screens
- 304L Stainless Steel
- Cylindrical Perforated Plate or Flat Panel Perforated Plate
- Perforated Plate foam control screens
- Aeration Grid (Aerobic)
- 304L Stainless Steel
- Medium Bubble
- Maintenance Free – No replacement part
- Slow-Speed Mixers (Anaerobic/Anoxic)
- Submersible or Top entry
- Can be speed controlled
Performance Key Factor
- Specific surface area of MBBR carriers is typically in the range from 350 to 1200 m2/m3
- Void ratio typically ranges from 60% to 90%
- Media/Carrier percent fill is 30-70% (typically 40%)
- The key empirical design parameter used to determine the required MBBR tank size is the surface area loading rate (SALR) in g BOD/m2/d
