What is Demulsifier ?

Demulsifiers, or emulsion breakers, are a class of specialty chemicals in oil field used to separate emulsions, for example, water in oil. They are commonly used in the processing of crude oil, which is typically produced along with significant quantities of saline water.

Why We Should Use Demulsifier?

• Asphaltenes, clays and metallic salts could be stabilized the emulsion of water in oil phase.
• Help water coalescence
• Wet out solids
• Avoid hydrocarbon dispersion in the aqueous phase
• Assist in emulsion breaking.
• To yield clean oil with minimum water and salt content
• Separated water should also be clean with minimum oil content
• Reduce settling time
• Local regulation (reduce oil in water disposal)

Typical Properties of Demulsifier

• Strong attraction to the oil/water interface (penetration)

     Migrate rapidly to interface and compete for its position at that site

• Flocculation (attraction)

    Attracts other similar droplets at the surface area of a water droplet to produce aglomeration of droplets

• Coalescence

    The complete rupturing of the emulsifier film and the uniting of water droplets

• Solid wetting

    – To remove emulsifying agents/solid particles from interface  such as iron sulphides, clay, silts, paraffin, asphaltenes, organic acid, etc

    – This can be achieved by altering the solid’s wettability 
        – They can be oil dispersed and removed with the oil
        – They can be water wetted and remove with the water
